Walking Liberty Half Dollar Values
The most beautiful US coin ever produced. Key dates, common dates, and silver content values from 1916 to 1947.
The Walking Liberty Half Dollar is widely considered the most beautiful US coin ever produced. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, it was minted from 1916 to 1947. Every coin contains 0.3617 troy ounces of pure silver. The design was later adapted for the American Silver Eagle bullion coin in 1986.
Silver Content and Melt Value
Every Walking Liberty Half has a melt value of approximately $28 based on current silver prices. This is the price floor. Common dates from the 1940s in circulated condition trade at or slightly above melt.
Key Dates and Values
The 1921 Walking Liberty: The Key Date
The 1921 and 1921-D are the undisputed keys. Mintages were extremely low (246,000 and 208,000) because the Mint shifted resources to silver dollar production. Circulated examples sell for $100 to $350. Uncirculated coins start at $500 and climb to several thousand in gem condition.
Common Dates
Most Walking Liberty halves from the 1940s are common. In circulated condition:
- Average circulated: $14 to $16 (at or near melt)
- Fine to Very Fine: $15 to $20
- Extremely Fine: $18 to $30
- Uncirculated: $40 to $100+ for common dates with good luster
Why Walking Liberties Command Premiums
The design's recognition from the American Silver Eagle creates demand that keeps Walking Liberty halves trading above generic 90% silver. A bag of Walking Liberties typically brings a higher price per ounce than a bag of Franklin halves or Roosevelt dimes.
