Full Bell Lines: The Hidden Premium

The Liberty Bell on the reverse has horizontal lines across its lower half. On most coins, these lines are weak due to striking pressure. When all lines are sharply defined, the coin receives a Full Bell Lines (FBL) designation from grading services. FBL coins bring significant premiums. A common-date Franklin worth $18 to $30 in MS63 might bring $50 to $100+ with FBL.

The most difficult dates to find with Full Bell Lines: 1953-S, 1954-S, 1955, and 1956. A 1953-S FBL in MS65 can bring $500 to $1,000+.

    Key Dates

    • 1949-S: Lowest mintage common date. Slightly scarcer in all grades.
    • 1953 (P): Low mintage Philadelphia issue.
    • 1955: Second lowest mintage. Difficult to find with Full Bell Lines.
    • 1948 (first year): First-year collector interest adds a small premium.
