    Eisenhower Dollar Values

Silver vs. clad Ike Dollars, values by year, and which varieties are worth looking for.

    Expert Guide

The Eisenhower Dollar was produced from 1971 to 1978. It was the last large-size US dollar coin. Most Ike Dollars are copper-nickel clad and worth $1 to $3. The 40% silver versions, sold in special Mint and proof sets, are worth $8 to $20+ for their silver content.

Silver vs. Clad: How to Tell the Difference

    • Clad (copper-nickel): All business strikes from Philadelphia (no mint mark) and Denver (D). No silver. Worth $1 to $3.
    • 40% silver: Only San Francisco (S) mint issues from collector sets. Not released for circulation.

Check the mint mark. S may be silver. No mark or D is always clad. Silver Ikes weigh 24.59 g vs. 22.68 g for clad. Silver edges are solid gray; clad shows a copper stripe.

    1974 Silver Dollar Value

The 1974 Eisenhower Dollar is heavily searched online. The answer depends on which version:

    • 1974 (P) or 1974-D: Copper-nickel clad. Worth $1 to $2 circulated, $3 to $6 uncirculated. No silver.
    • 1974-S Silver: 40% silver, from collector sets only. Worth $8 to $12 circulated, $12 to $20 uncirculated.

    1978 Silver Dollar Value

There is no 1978 silver dollar. All 1978 Eisenhower Dollars are copper-nickel clad. The Mint stopped producing silver Ikes after 1976. People call these "silver dollars" because of their large size, but 1977 and 1978 issues contain zero silver.

    The 1972 Type 2 Variety

The 1972 Philadelphia Ike Dollar exists in three die varieties. Type 2 was created from a proof die accidentally used for business strikes. The earth on the reverse shows distinctly different continent shapes. A 1972 Type 2 sells for $25 to $75 circulated, $100 to $500+ uncirculated.

    The Bicentennial Dollar (1776–1976)

No Ike Dollars were dated 1975. The Mint produced dual-dated "1776-1976" coins for the Bicentennial. Two varieties exist: Type 1 (bold lettering) and Type 2 (thin lettering). Clad versions are worth $1 to $3. Silver S-mint versions are worth $8 to $20.

    Error Coins

    • 1971-D Friendly Eagle: Die variety with smoother eagle breast. $5 to $15 uncirculated.
    • Off-center strikes: Rare on dollars. $50 to $500+ depending on severity.
    • Wrong planchet: Ike Dollar on smaller planchet is a major error worth $1,000+.
