Dates and Restrikes
Switzerland produced 20 Franc coins from 1897 to 1936, then struck restrikes in 1935, 1947, and 1949. The 1935 restrikes are the most common, with over 20 million produced. They often carry a small "L" to the left of the date and "B" to the right, indicating the Bern mint.
All versions contain identical gold. A 1935 restrike is worth the same as a 1913 original in terms of metal content. Some original dates from the early 1900s carry small collector premiums.
The 10 Franc Version
Switzerland also produced a 10 Franc gold coin from 1911 to 1922. It contains exactly half the gold of the 20 Franc: 0.0933 troy ounces, worth about $469. The design matches the 20 Franc. These are less common than the 20 Franc but still turn up in collections.
What Affects the Price
Date rarity. The 1926 Vreneli had a very low mintage and sells for well above melt. Most other dates are common and trade near melt value. The 1897 first-year issue also carries a small premium.
Condition. Many restrikes sat in bank vaults and survived in near-mint condition. Brilliant uncirculated examples are common and sell for a small premium. Heavily circulated coins trade at melt.
Swiss reputation. The association with Swiss banking and financial stability creates steady demand for these coins among gold investors. They're one of the most liquid European gold coins.
