Italian 20 Lire Gold Coin Value
Same gold content as the French Napoleon and Swiss Vreneli. A Latin Monetary Union coin with 0.1867 oz of gold.
The Italian 20 Lire gold coin was produced from 1861 to 1927. It contains 0.1867 troy ounces of gold at 90% purity, identical to the French 20 Franc, Swiss 20 Franc, and Belgian 20 Franc. Italy was a founding member of the Latin Monetary Union.
Gold Content and Melt Value
Italian issues are scarcer than French ones. Italy minted far fewer 20 Lire coins than France produced 20 Francs. This can result in slightly higher premiums, especially for older dates under Vittorio Emanuele II.
Common Questions
Is a 20 Lire worth the same as a 20 Franc?
In gold content, yes. Both contain 0.1867 oz. The Italian coin may carry a slightly higher premium due to lower mintage.
I have a coin that says "Lire" but it's not gold.
Italy produced many base metal Lire. Only the gold denominations (10, 20, 50, 100 Lire in gold) are precious metal coins.
